How the Match Formula Works

A formula described as “50% of contributions up to 6% of pay” means the employer adds fifty cents for each dollar you contribute, but only on the first 6% of salary. On an $80,000 salary, contributing 6% means you put in $4,800 and the employer adds $2,400. Contributing only 3% would generally produce a $1,200 match under that formula.

2026 federal limits

The IRS employee elective-deferral limit is $24,500 in 2026. The general age-50 catch-up limit is $8,000; participants ages 60–63 may have an $11,250 catch-up limit. Annual additions are generally limited to the lesser of $72,000 or 100% of compensation, before applicable catch-up contributions, and compensation used for contribution calculations is generally capped at $360,000. If prior-year wages from the plan sponsor exceeded $150,000, 2026 catch-up contributions generally must be Roth when the applicable plan offers catch-up contributions. This calculator does not ask age or prior-year wages and does not determine legal eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I contribute for the full match?
For the common formula used here, contribute at least the “match applies up to” percentage. Your plan may use tiers, dollar caps, or a per-paycheck formula, so verify the summary plan description.
Does the match count toward my $24,500 limit?
Employer match generally does not reduce the employee elective-deferral limit. It does count toward a separate overall annual additions limit.
Is employer match guaranteed money?
Not always. A vesting schedule can require you to remain employed before matching contributions become fully yours, and investment value can rise or fall.
